Azithromycin is a macrolide-type antibiotic used to treat ears, skin, tissues, and STDS, including Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia is an STI that causes vaginal and penis itching. Azithromycin stops the infections by inhibiting the production of the bacteria, so they do not grow or replicate.

Description

  • How Does It Work?
    • The Azithromycin 250 mg tablet is taken for three days and clears up the infection within seven days. Administering the antibiotic stops the burning pain while urinating. The prescriber may require a test, usually a urine or swab test, to confirm Chlamydia before treatment.

Warnings

The prescription of Azithromycin is not suitable for Chlamydia patients who suffer from:

  • Severe liver, heart, or kidney problems.
  • Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood.
  • Muscle weakness called myasthenia gravis.
  • Migraines, and are taking any ergot derivatives.
  • Neurological or psychiatric problems.
Seek medical attention immediately if you notice bleeding after sex or thick bloody vaginal discharge, which could indicate another serious condition.

Directions

  • This treatment is 3 days course.
  • Take TWO tablets (500mg), then take ONE tablet (250mg) for 2 days
  • Always continue with the course even if you feel better. If your infection gets worse or you do not start to feel better within a few days or a new infection develops, go back and see your doctor.
  • If you forget to take Azithromycin, take your dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, just skip that dose and take the next one when it is due. If in doubt, please contact your doctor or pharmacist. If you have to skip a dose, still take all of your tablets. This means that you will finish your course a day later. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
  • Never stop the treatment with Azithromycin on your own, but first discuss this with your doctor. If you stop taking Azithromycin too soon, the infection may return. Take the tablets for the full time of treatment, even when you begin to feel better.
  • The tablets can be taken with or without food. The tablets should be taken with ½ glass of water.
