What is Fucidin Cream?

Fucidin Cream is a topical antibiotic treatment containing fusidic acid (20mg/g). It’s used for skin infections caused by bacteria, such as impetigo, infected eczema, and folliculitis. The cream's formulation is gentle, making it suitable for use on sensitive skin areas, including the face. It is often prescribed when there is a risk of the infection spreading or worsening.

How Does Fucidin Cream Work?

The active ingredient in Fucidin is Fusidic acid. Fusidic acid targets bacteria by inhibiting their ability to produce proteins, which are essential for their growth and survival. This action stops the infection from spreading, allowing the body’s natural healing processes to take effect. It is effective against a range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, making it a versatile option for treating various skin infections. When applied consistently as prescribed, it helps reduce symptoms like redness, swelling, and discomfort while preventing the bacteria from spreading to other areas of the skin.

Warnings

Avoid using Fucidin cream near eyes. If you accidentally get any in your eye, wash it out with cold water straight away, then bathe your eye with eyewash. Avoid the cream if you meet the below conditions:

  • Are allergic to any of its ingredients.
  • Are allergic to steroid medicines.
  • Using Fucidin cream over large areas of skin.
  • Have acne or perioral dermatitis
  • Have bacteria or viral infection other than on the skin.

Directions

  • Apply a thin layer of the cream to the infected area.
  • Be careful to avoid your eyes if you use it on your face.

Leave Fucidin cream to soak in for 30 minutes before applying other lotions or ointments to ensure it is fully absorbed and not diluted.

The active ingredients contained in Fucidin is Fusidic acid (2%). 

Fucidin also includes the following substances Butylhydroxyanisole (E320), Cetyl alcohol, Glycerol, Liquid paraffin, Polysorbate 60, Potassium sorbate, Purified water, tocopherol, Hydrochloric acid, and White soft paraffin.

Side Effects

Side effects from using Fucidin cream are rare. Common ones include:

  • Irritation at site of application.
  • Itching and rash.
  • Eczema.
