Omeprazole is a very commonly prescribed drug in the UK used to lower stomach acid. It is effective in treating acid reflux, heartburn, indigestion and most conditions related to excess stomach acid. Omeprazole medication reduces the production of acid in the stomach relieving the symptoms such as burping, a burning sensation in the chest, feeling full, heavy or bloated and pain in the stomach. Omeprazole has a high success rate and calms down the symptoms for up to 72 hours. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid, helping to treat conditions like acid reflux, heartburn, and ulcers. It is also used to promote healing of the stomach lining and prevent further acid damage.
During the digestion process, the stomach produces acid to help break down food substances. The oesophagus is protected from these acids by the oesophageal sphincter muscles. The muscles allow a one way system for food to get to the intestines while acids remain down. When the muscles weaken, acid passes down, resulting in acid reflux and causing heartburn. Frequent acid may be a result of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Omeprazole is a prescription medicine for GORD and other similar stomach conditions. It works by suppressing the activity of proton pumps, the proteins which produce acids in the stomach. This decreases the amount of acid in the stomach, relieving the symptoms of heartburn.
