Why should you get vaccinated before travelling?
Going to another country can be an amazing and rewarding experience. But at the same time, you are introducing your body to a whole range of potentially harmful pathogens against which you may not have adequate protection. To make sure you are as safe as possible you need to build up an “immunity” (hence why we use the word “immunisations”). In various countries pathogens exist which may lead to infections and diseases such as Hepatitis A or Yellow Fever.
In some cases, these illnesses can be extremely severe with long lasting implications. They can even prove to be fatal. But by taking adequate precautions, such as having a vaccination or multiple before you make your journey, you will be able to develop protection against them.
How do vaccinations work?
Travel vaccines all work in the same way and they offer immunity against a range of infections and diseases. You will be given an injection with a solution inside that imitates the disease. This, in turn, kicks your immune system into action and your body produces and releases an army of antibodies (white blood cells) to eliminate the invading pathogen. If you’re exposed to bacteria or viruses while visiting another country your body already has the blueprint ready for a defence and your body will be able to fight it off effectively, before you can feel the full effects.
It is highly recommended that you get any vaccines you need at least 21 days prior to travelling to your destination. This means that your body has adequate time to produce the antibodies needed for maximum protection. However, certain vaccinations need to be administered even further in advance.
